Kana Theatre in Iceland – study visit

We’re getting to know the culture of Iceland, and we hope that soon we can also present it to Szczecin’s habitants. Kana Theatre will go on a study visit between June 3rd and 7th. This trip is the first step in
planning the future program of experience exchange, artistic practices, and presentations between organizations and artists working both in Poland and Iceland.

Community art, social art, artvism, and theatre understood as a searching and communication space pose as main program lines in Kana Theatre. “Samfélag fyrir Öll – Community for All” (SFO) organization from Reykjanesbaer also works in similar areas that focus on engaging local communities in creative processes, treating art as a space for integration and development, as well as realizing theatre projects. We are particularly close to the idea of being mindful of local ecosystems, as well as strengthening the social fabric of the region through active participation in culture.

At the same time, this organization has extensive contacts within the theatre community in Reykjavik – due to our interest in experimental art and movement-performative activities, it connected us with the second partner: PHYSICAL félagið, with whom we want to establish artistic cooperation. An additional value of our visit will be that we will be able to participate in the international Reykjanes Arts Festival held there – thanks to this, we have the chance to see many different artistic activities created by artists from Iceland.

We would like to use the visit to, on one hand, get to know the local community of Reykjanesbaer and the Partner's methods of working in the field of community art, and on the other hand, to participate in a program that could serve as a basis for a series of presentations of Icelandic theaters for the audience in Szczecin. We are planning meetings with our main Partners in both locations: on the Reykjanesbaer peninsula and in Reykjavik, participation in the events of the Reykjanes Arts Festival, as well as additional meetings with other organizations
as part of getting to know the cultural environments of both places. The visit is therefore intended for mutual recognition, familiarization with the nature of activities, and ways of thinking about art. A twin visit of the Partners to Poland is also planned. We are looking forward to it.

The ART. OF COMMUNITY – COMMUNITY OF ART project. A study visit of the Kana Theatre in Iceland is being carried out as part of the "Culture" Program funded by the Financial Mechanism of the European Economic Area (EEA Funds) 2021–2028.
